 Strength of Daymaster (DM)

Accurately determining the DM strength is crucial for an accurate Bazi analysis. However, in practice, DM that appears strong to one person may seem to be weak for another. People may see the strength differently but there's only one true analysis.

Knowing the DM strength is possibly the first step in analyzing a chart, it is very important, but might not be as important as identifying the Useful God and the overall structure. To accurately determine the DM strength, you may consider the below factors:

1. 势 Intensity, is most possibly the strongest influence, i.e. a DM born in season should be termed 'timely' as 得时 “DeShi” in Chinese, which can be literally translated as 'getting the time'. Such DMs would tend to be strong, like wood born in spring, fire in summer, metal in autumn, water in winter and earth at the last month of each season. Being born timely also guarantees the support of the month's root.

2. 气, Qi refers to the 12 Qi stages of the 10 heavenly stems. as it represent the stages for the element in general. However, many learners in Bazi, especially those at the beginner level would be confused by the 12 Qi Stages because it seemed that, while for the Yang Heaven Stems such as Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng and Ren, the “ChangSheng” or “longevity factor” is logically sound to the resource factor enhancing their strength, thus resulting in a high level of strength, whilst Yin DM are strangely having “exhaustive factors” or “output factors” as their “ChangSheng” or “longevity factors”.

To explain this, in Bazi, which is a form of natural science using Chinese Characters which are pictorially representation of natural phenomenon:

  1. Yi Wood is having Wu Fire as the Longevity Factor because Wu represents noon time, and during noon time, small grass or flowers will tend to grow most rapidly due to the presence of sunlight.
  2. Ding Fire is having You Metal as the Longevity Factor because You represents the evening hours and it is when people will turn on their lighting and it is also when the moon and stars will appear.
  3. Ji Earth, which is a form of wet earth, is having You Metal as the Longevity Factor because You metal in the I-Ching is under the “Dui Gua” (兑卦) which is representing the wetness, and when Ji Earth is created when dried earth is mixed with water.
  4. Yin Metal is having Zi Water as the Longevity Factor because Zi Water is able to prevent fire from burning and melting Yin Metal. And Yin Metal will being physical appealing after being wash clean by water.
  5. Gui Water is having Mao as the Longevity Factor because Mao is of the morning hours in which mist or vapours will be formed above a grass field.

Therefore, having Longevity Factor or “ChangShang” is another possible indication of an increase in Daymaster strength.

Additionally, as Master Xu LeWu says "Having one Storage is better than having one BiJian (parallel), having a residual Qi is better than having 2 BiJians, meeting ChangSheng, Lu or Wang is better than having 3 BiJians".

Therefore, storage, residual Qi or ChangSheng Lu and Wang are not restricted to the Month's EB only. ChangSheng refers to the EB where the HS is born, Lu refers to GuanDai stage and Wang refers to the DiWang stage. In latter chapters, I will explain what is the main key for opening storage.

3. 生 Engendering and 泄 Exhausting, 生 Engendering refers to the element produces the DM, and 泄 Exhausting refers to the element that DM engenders. Having many elements that engenders DM does not necessarily mean the DM is strong. When the engendering element is overly strong and the engendered element is weak, it's a condition called 母旺子衰, 母慈灭子 'Compassionate mother destroys the child. E.g many water would cause wood to float. Many earth bury metal, many metal cause water to be turbid etc.

4.通根, connected through roots, or 'rooted' refers to the Hidden Heavenly Stems (HHS) of the same element as the DM. The polarity of the elements in Hidden Heavenly Stems does not matter, a Yang DM can root through a Yin HHS and vice versa.
